Lalit Modi, former IPL chairman, has yet again been in the spotlight, for his latest unique idea. The former chairman has invited all the players participating in Indian Premier League, to re-create an iconic warm-up performance by legendary football player Diego Maradona, and has vowed a reward to the performer.
The challenge came after, a viral clip from 1989, re-surfaced on the social media, where Maradona can be seen warming up for Napoli, performing the famous warm up for the anthem "Live is Life" by Opus. The clip was considered legendary for its uniqueness, and still holds value for the football enthusiasts all around.
Lalit Modi Challenges IPL Players
Commenting on the same on social media platform X, Modi challenged all the IPL players, to perform the similar warm-up in matches, get captured on cameras and do it on the sidelines while the music is being played.
"Love this. Ok the players in @IPL-check this out. Lets see who can get caught on camera doing his best performance- The best act caught on camera and most becomes most trended on social media will be gifted a limited edition Rolex from me."
Modi added that the reward will be one of a kind, and hinted at the prize value, by compared it to Hardik Pandya's wristwatch collection.
“Has to be an IPL team player on the sidelines doing his rhythm to the tune playing in stadia at that time you can be competing with @hardikpandya7 watch collection. Promise the watch will be an envy of others. And I always keep my promises ask @YUVSTRONG12."
In another post he encouraged players once more. "Go for it @IPL players. Lets see the fans or cameras catch this."
Modi's Past and the Rise of the IPL
The most recent statement by Modi came a long time after he left Indian cricket administration. Modi was the chairman of the IPL from 2008-2010 and was involved with the initial phase of establishing the IPL. In April 2010 he was suspended for the alleged wrongdoings regarding financial impropriety. Following an inquiry he was banned from Indian cricket forever in 2013 by the BCCI.
Ever since he stepped down, the IPL has enjoyed a boom. An eight team event then, is now ten franchises ( Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants have been the last to be added to the fray). Today the IPL is a globally famous cricket league.
With the challenge from Modi, the IPL 2026 season has got an interesting dimension, it remains to be seen whether any player is bold enough to take up his challenge and be in the headlines.
