Cotton Clothes Care: Simple Washing Tricks to Prevent Fading and Color Bleeding

Cotton clothes are a go-to choice in summer because they’re light, breathable, and gentle on the skin. But they can lose their color quickly if not washed properly—especially darker or newly bought garments. The good news is that a few small changes in how you wash and dry them can make a big difference.

Start with a salt-water soak (for new clothes)

When washing cotton clothes for the first time, avoid putting them straight into the machine. Instead, soak them in water mixed with a little salt for about 20–30 minutes. This helps set the dye in the fabric and reduces the chances of color bleeding in future washes. After soaking, rinse with clean water and then wash normally.

Always use cold water and mild detergent

Hot or even lukewarm water can cause colors to fade faster. Stick to cold water for washing cotton garments. Also, avoid harsh detergents—use a mild liquid detergent instead. Turning clothes inside out before washing helps protect their outer surface and keeps the color intact for longer.

Be careful while drying

Direct, harsh sunlight can fade cotton fabric quickly. Always dry your clothes inside out and prefer mild sunlight or shaded areas. This prevents direct exposure to strong UV rays and helps maintain the brightness of the fabric.

A small habit change goes a long way

Avoid mixing heavily dyed clothes with lighter ones, especially during the first few washes. Also, don’t overload the washing machine, as excessive friction can dull the fabric.
