IND vs AFG: Currently, Indian players are engaged in the IPL (Indian Premier League). Following this, the Indian team is set to tour Ireland, but in the midst of the IPL, the BCCI has announced the schedule for another series. The Afghanistan national team will visit India for a T20 series and a Test match.
A significant question arises regarding when the sole Test match between India and Afghanistan (IND vs AFG) will take place and why it will not be part of the WTC (World Test Championship).
Schedule for the IND vs AFG Series
In June of this year, the Afghanistan team will tour India. The series will kick off with a Test match, followed by three One Day Internationals (ODIs). The Test match is scheduled to begin on June 6 and will conclude on June 10, with all matches taking place in New Chandigarh.
Previously, India and Afghanistan faced off in a Test match in 2018, which marked Afghanistan's inaugural Test. India won that match by an innings and 262 runs, held in Bengaluru.
Why the IND vs AFG Test Will Not Be Part of the WTC
The reason this match will not be included in the World Test Championship is quite clear. According to ICC regulations, Afghanistan is not part of the current WTC cycle, which began in 2025 and will run until 2027. The ICC has stipulated that only matches played between the top nine teams will count towards the WTC standings.
This exclusion applies not only to Afghanistan but also to any team playing against Ireland or Zimbabwe. Matches involving these teams do not contribute to the World Test Championship. Teams participating in the WTC are considered part of the elite group, meaning the outcomes of this match will not affect the WTC points table.
