5.2 magnitude earthquake hits Manipur's Kamjong

Imphal: A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck Kamjong district in Manipur early Tuesday morning, sending strong tremors across the region. The quake was recorded at 5:59 am, according to official data from the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

Manipur earthquake today

Tremors were felt in and around Kamjong, triggering panic among residents. The sudden shaking was strong enough to wake people from their sleep, prompting many to rush out of their homes and gather in open areas for safety.

According to the NCS, the earthquake originated at a depth of around 62 kilometres beneath the earth’s surface, classifying it as a mid-depth seismic event. Such earthquakes are often felt over a wider area, though their impact on the surface is usually less severe compared to shallow quakes.

Despite the intensity of the tremors, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.

“Earthquake of Magnitude: 5.2, Occurred on 21/04/2026, 05:59:33 IST, Lat: 24.703 N, Long: 94.415 E, Depth: 62 Km, Location: Kamjong, Manipur, India,” the NCS said on X.

Myanmar earthquake today

Around 20 minutes before the Manipur earthquake, a 4.6 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar. The tremors were felt at around 5:38 am IST. The quake’s epicentre was located at latitude 23.188°N and longitude 94.527°E and it occurred about 101 kilometres below the surface.

Uttarakhand earthquake

On Monday night, Uttarakhand also experienced seismic activity. A mild earthquake measuring 3.0 on the Richter scale struck Pauri Garhwal on Monday at 8:32 pm IST. The epicentre was located at a depth of 10 kilometres, as per the NCS.

Japan earthquake

A day earlier, a strong 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit northeastern and northern Japan on Monday, prompting a tsunami alert, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. An 80-centimetre tsunami wave was later recorded at Kuji port in Iwate Prefecture, the agency said.
