New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address to the nation on Saturday, had made a sharp attack on the opposition parties over the non-passage of the ‘Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill’ in Parliament. The PM scolded the opposition, but now the counterattack has started. Opposition parties have opened a front regarding this address of PM Modi and the matter has reached the threshold of the Election Commission.

Communist Party of India (CPI) Rajya Sabha MP P. Sandosh Kumar has lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission against this address of the Prime Minister. Sandosh Kumar wrote a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner alleging that the purpose of the Prime Minister’s address was completely political. He claimed that this is a blatant violation of the ‘Model Code of Conduct’. The MP has demanded a thorough investigation into the matter and appropriate action.

Kharge said – government machinery is being misused

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has accused Prime Minister Modi of using the government platform for politics. He said that the PM turned an official address into a political speech, which was only a means to sling mud at his opponents and spread lies. Kharge wrote on the social media platform ‘X’ that a frustrated and disappointed Prime Minister, who has no concrete achievements in the last 12 years, has misused the government machinery to attack his opponents. According to Kharge, the PM took the name of Congress 59 times in his speech, while mentioned women very little, which clearly reflects his priorities.

What did Prime Minister Modi say in his address?

During his address, Prime Minister Modi had strongly attacked the opposition and said that for him ‘national interest’ is paramount, but for some parties ‘party interest’ has become bigger than the country. Taking the names of Congress, DMK, TMC and Samajwadi Party, the PM said that the women power of the country has to bear the brunt of the selfish politics of these parties.

PM Modi said emotionally, “Yesterday, when the women’s welfare resolution was dropped in the Parliament, I saw that the dynastic parties like Congress, TMC and SP were happily thumping the table and clapping. This was not just a thumping on the table, but a deep blow to the self-respect and self-respect of the women of the country. Women can forget everything, but never forget their insult.” This statement of the Prime Minister has now taken the form of a big political controversy.

Insult of democracy and constitution?

The opposition argues that it is inappropriate to broadcast such speech through government channels and mediums after the implementation of the code of conduct. Mallikarjun Kharge has called it an insult to democracy and the Constitution of India. Now it remains to be seen what stand the Election Commission takes on these complaints of the opposition parties and whether this address will actually be considered a violation of the electoral code of conduct.
