A young cricketing talent is on the verge of something historic but not everyone is convinced that it should happen so quickly.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a teenage batting sensation, has been grabbing attention with his impressive performances in the IPL. His rise has been so rapid that reports now suggest he could be selected for India’s upcoming tour of Ireland, where the team is scheduled to play two T20 internationals in late June. If he makes it to the playing XI, he would become the youngest male cricketer to represent India at the international level.

While the excitement around his potential debut continues to grow, veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has shared a more cautious perspective. Speaking on his YouTube channel Ash Ki Baat, Ashwin stressed that earning an India cap should never be taken lightly. According to him, representing the country should carry deep meaning, pride and value. He pointed out that it is not just about performing well in a debut match or facing strong opposition but about truly earning that opportunity.

Ashwin also suggested an alternative path for young players like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Instead of rushing them into the senior team, he believes they should first gain experience through India A tours. He even proposed televising these matches to give fans a chance to watch emerging talent while maintaining the importance of the senior team selection.

To explain his point further, Ashwin referred to the dominance of Australia’s cricket team in the 1990s. Despite not winning a T20 World Cup until 2021, the team earned long-lasting respect worldwide. He highlighted how even highly skilled players like Brad Hodge, Martin Love and Stuart Law struggled to get consistent opportunities due to intense competition. Meanwhile, Michael Hussey had to wait longer than usual to begin his international career. Ashwin believes this level of competition helped maintain respect for the team and its players.

He concluded by acknowledging India’s vast talent pool as a positive sign but firmly reiterated that the India cap should always be given with great care and significance.
