Scorching Heatwave Hits India: Akola and Kalaburagi Sizzle at 44°C

India is feeling the full force of summer as temperatures soar across the country. A heatwave alert has been issued for large parts of western, eastern, and central India. Maharashtra’s Akola and Karnataka’s Kalaburagi emerged as the hottest cities, with the mercury touching 44°C. Northern India is also sweltering, with many areas reporting maximum temperatures around 40°C.

Cities Battling Extreme Heat

Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan are currently experiencing severe heat. Among the top 10 hottest cities in India, four are from Maharashtra, two each from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and one each from Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.

According to the Meteorological Department, Akola and Kalaburagi are the country’s hottest cities at 44°C. Amravati in Maharashtra recorded 43.8°C, while Wardha reached 43.5°C. Adilabad in Telangana also made it to the top five hottest cities at 43.3°C.

Other cities in the extreme heat zone include Solapur (Maharashtra) at 43.3°C, Anantapur (Andhra Pradesh) at 43.2°C, and Kurnool (Andhra Pradesh) at 43.2°C. Banda (Uttar Pradesh), Nizamabad (Telangana), Yavatmal, and Gadchiroli (Maharashtra) recorded 42.6°C, while Jalgaon reached 42.5°C.

Vidarbha Region Faces Harsh Conditions

Vidarbha in Maharashtra is particularly struggling under the intense heat. Cities like Washim, Chandrapur, and Nagpur are also enduring extreme temperatures. Nearly half of India’s 25 hottest cities are in Maharashtra, with eight cities in Vidarbha recording temperatures above 42.2°C.

Heatwave Alert in Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh is also experiencing a severe heatwave. Temperatures in 14 cities have crossed 40°C, with Narmadapuram topping the list at 42.1°C. From April 16, heatwave alerts have been issued for 15 districts including Ratlam, Jhabua, Barwani, Khargone, Khandwa, and Balaghat.
