Lemon provides vitamin C and antioxidants. According to USDA FoodData Central, 100 g of lemon contains about 53 mg of vitamin C, which supports metabolism and protects cells from oxidative stress. These properties have led many to associate lemon juice with detoxing, weight loss and clearer skin. But the evidence is unconvincing.
Dr. Bui Thi Duyen, deputy head of the nutrition department at Military Hospital 175, dismisses it as a method for detoxing or weight loss, saying the main benefits of drinking lemon juice in the morning are rehydration after a night’s sleep and a small vitamin C boost.

There is currently no scientific evidence that lemon water directly burns calories or leads to weight loss, and any potential benefit comes from replacing high-sugar beverages such as bubble tea with it, she says.
While some believe acidic drinks stimulate digestion, this effect is not the same for everyone, she adds.
According to the American Dental Associationfrequent consumption of acidic drinks like lemon juice can erode tooth enamel if not properly diluted or accompanied by good oral care.
Additionally, for people with conditions such as gastritis or acid reflux, drinking lemon juice on an empty stomach may irritate the stomach lining and cause discomfort.
Dr. Duyen recommends drinking diluted lemon juice (half a lemon with 200-300 ml of water) without adding much sugar. Using a straw or rinsing the mouth afterward can help protect tooth enamel. Those with stomach issues should be cautious.
Ultimately, habits like drinking lemon juice in the morning or eating late at night are only small parts of an overall diet. No single food or routine determines health. What matters most is maintaining a balanced diet, eating at appropriate times, and following a healthy lifestyle.
Rather than looking for quick fixes, eat regularly in line with your biological rhythm. Distribute energy intake throughout the day and favor daytime over nighttime. Focus on vegetables and high-quality protein, while limiting sugar and processed foods.
