Many times it is annoying to see long queues at toll plazas. However, there are rules made by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which may give you the right to proceed without paying the toll under certain circumstances. The most important rule in this is the ‘Yellow Line’ rule.

How to get rid of the toll queue? Know the rules

Congestion at toll plazas adds to both time and mental stress while traveling on national highways. To remedy this, NHAI has implemented some strict rules. If the toll operators do not follow these rules, passengers are allowed to proceed without paying the toll.

What is the Yellow Line Rule?

Each toll lane has a yellow line drawn at a distance of about 100 meters from the booth. If the queue of vehicles goes beyond this line, all the vehicles inside that line have to be allowed to pass without paying toll. This rule is made to keep the traffic smooth.

The 100 meter rule and your savings

As per NHAI rules, the queue of vehicles should not exceed 100 meters at the toll plaza. If it increases, toll officials have to open the barrier. Toll cannot be collected until the queue is within 100 meters again.

10 second waiting time rule

The ’10 second rule’ also applies without the yellow line. Processing each vehicle at the toll booth should not take more than 10 seconds. If you have to wait more than 10 seconds, you can proceed without paying the toll.

Rules applicable despite FASTag

Although the FASTag system has eased congestion at the toll, these rules are still in place. Passengers cannot be held responsible if the FASTag scanner malfunctions or is delayed due to technical issues. Even then you can proceed without paying toll.

What do you do to avoid arguments?

In such situations, keep calm and communicate with the toll managers. You can also lodge a complaint through the helpline at the toll plaza or NHAI’s number 1033. Knowing these rules is your greatest protection.
