On April 8, the Chinese Table Tennis Association released its official roster for the upcoming tournament, notably missing Fan, the reigning Olympic and national champion.

While the federation maintains that the 29-year-old voluntarily stepped down despite being eligible for direct selection, the brief explanation quickly turned into controversy.

Chinese outlets like Jimu News and The Paper have urged the public to avoid conspiracy theories. They suggest that the withdrawal is simply a personal choice by an athlete who has reached the pinnacle of the sport and requires a period of adjustment.

These reports emphasize that Fan remains in fine form and that the coaching staff fully supported his continued participation, dismissing rumors that he had fallen out of favor with management.

However, the comment section of Chinese newspaper Theirs tells a different story. Many fans have questioned the “voluntary” nature of the announcement, with some suggesting the wording is merely a formality to mask punishment.

Other opinions went further, questioning the relationship between Fan and the team. A user wrote: “After the 2024 Olympics, the champion doesn’t want to be too constrained, while the leadership needs him to build the team. The two sides were not on the same page, so they ultimately had to part ways in an awkward situation.”

The debate has also touched on the high-pressure environment of Chinese sports.

“Last time when Fan withdrew, everyone supported him because everyone understood it was external pressure. This time is the same,” a fan commented.

Fan is the reigning Olympic men’s singles champion and was the world number one until he withdrew from the world ranking at the end of 2024. At that time, he explained that he did not want to be constrained by having to compete in too many tournaments to maintain his ranking. He currently mainly competes in Europe, but is still considered China’s number one by fans thanks to his national gold medal.

Some supporters have linked Fan’s situation to the recent “toxic fan culture” controversies involving other athletes, such as Olympic diver Quan Hongchan, who suffered online attacks in a a long period, mainly for her appearance and weight. This put immense pressure on her to the point that she was considering retirement after the 2024 Olympics.

There are still opinions calling for a simple perspective. A fan commented, “Right after the Olympics, Fan said his future wasn’t just about table tennis. It’s not a surprise that he didn’t return to the national team during this time.”
