Coventry City are all but officially promoted back to the Premier League after Middlesbrough suffered a home defeat to Portsmouth this afternoon. Frank Lampard's side had to settle for a frustrating goalless stalemate against already-relegated Sheffield Wednesday at the CBS Arena in one of the Championship's lunchtime fixtures.

That was after watching Millwall drop points in a draw at West Brom on Friday night. The Lions' failure to secure all three points leaves them on 73 in third place, while Boro's 1-0 home defeat at the Riverside leaves them on 72 in fourth. Millwall can collect a maximum of 85 points from their remaining four matches, while Boro can only reach 84. City's point against the Owls lifted them to 85, and boasting a goal difference of 42+ - which puts them 22 ahead of Boro and a remarkable 33 above Millwall - Lampard's men are virtually assured of a top-two finish and are consequently bound for the Premier League.

A single further point at Blackburn Rovers on Friday evening would officially seal promotion - a match for which more than 7,000 Sky Blue Army supporters are making the journey to Ewood Park.

Whether confirmation comes home or away is of little concern to Lampard, who said: "I keep being asked whether it's better when you do it at home, win it away or win it when you're driving home on the M40 as another result happens.

"But I don't care how we win it. In fact, my experience of winning the Premier League has been at Stamford Bridge and it's been at Bolton away, and Bolton away was the best. So we'll see."

Next up for Coventry will be their attempt to win a first title since 2020 when they won League One. They last lifted the second-tier title in 1967.
