Former Indian cricketer dies amid IPL 2026, BCCI President pays tribute

Tamil Nadu, 11 April 2026: Former Indian cricketer Chingalput Doraikannu Gopinath (CD Gopinath) has died at the age of 96. He was the last surviving player of India’s first Test win against England in 1952. After his playing career, he served the team as a selector and manager. CD Gopinath died at his daughter’s house in Adyar, Chennai.

C.D. Gopinath had a great start in his first Test against England in 1951-52, in which he scored 50 not out and 42 runs. He played his last international match in 1960. In his nine-year career, he played eight Tests, in which he scored 242 runs and took one wicket. Additionally, he played 83 first-class matches, scoring 4259 runs, which included nine centuries and 23 half-centuries. He also took 14 first-class wickets.

Gopina played a key role in India’s historic victory against England in Chennai. He scored 35 runs and took the important catch of Brian Statham in Vinu Mankad’s over. In that match, Mankade took 8 wickets in the first innings and 4 wickets in the second innings.

BCCI President paid tribute

BCCI President Mithun Manhas C.D. Paid tribute to Gopinath. He wrote on

The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association condoled his death and wrote, “CD Gopinath, rest in peace! A true pioneer of Indian cricket and the last surviving member of the historic team that scripted India’s first Test win. Your legacy will forever be etched in the rich history of the game.”
