What many dismiss as routine acidity could be a warning sign of serious underlying health conditions, doctors caution. A Bengaluru-based specialist has warned that persistent gastric symptoms, if ignored, may escalate into life-threatening complications.
According to Dr Nikhil Shellagi of Manipal Hospital Whitefield, increasing numbers of patients are relying on over-the-counter remedies while overlooking deeper medical issues.
When acidity becomes dangerous
While occasional acidity after heavy meals is common, experts stress that frequent or persistent symptoms should not be ignored. Dr Shellagi noted that recurring discomfort affecting daily life may indicate serious gastrointestinal or even cardiac conditions.
“What appears to be simple acidity could actually be a structural or functional disorder requiring timely diagnosis,” he explained.
Case highlights risks of delay
A recent case involved a 68-year-old man from Hassan who ignored symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort for years. When his condition worsened, he developed chest pain and a dangerously low heart rate.
Doctors later diagnosed a hiatus hernia, where the stomach had moved into the chest cavity, exerting pressure on the heart. Due to delayed treatment and weakened health, immediate surgery was not possible.
Following stabilisation through a pacemaker and nutritional support, the patient underwent robotic-assisted surgery, successfully restoring normal anatomy.
Warning signs to watch for
Doctors advise seeking medical attention if the following symptoms persist:
- Continuous acidity unresponsive to medication
- Chest pain un to exertion
- Unexplained weight loss or reduced appetite
- Difficulty swallowing or frequent regurgitation
Early diagnosis can significantly improve outcomes and prevent complications.
Lifestyle changes can reduce risk
Experts recommend simple lifestyle modifications such as eating smaller meals, avoiding lying down immediately after eating, and limiting long-term dependence on self-medication.
The key message, doctors emphasise, is not to delay medical consultation. Persistent symptoms should always be evaluated to rule out serious conditions and ensure timely treatment.
