US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has stated that China is responsible for cutting any harmful ties with Iran.
In recent remarks, Greer emphasised that China should take clear steps to end connections that support or benefit Iran amid the current conflict. He noted that Beijing has long maintained close economic and trade relations with Tehran, including purchasing discounted Iranian oil and engaging in other forms of cooperation.
Focus on Responsibility
Greer made the point while discussing the broader impact of the Iran war on global energy markets and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. He suggested that countries like China, which have benefited from ties with Iran in the past, now have a responsibility to help stabilise the situation rather than prolong instability.
The statement reflects the Trump administration’s view that major trading partners must align more closely with US concerns regarding Iran, especially as Washington continues to apply pressure on Tehran during the fragile two-week ceasefire.
Greer’s comments come ahead of planned high-level talks, including the upcoming Trump-Xi summit, where trade stability and geopolitical issues are expected to feature prominently. The US continues to stress the need for China to address national security and economic risks linked to its relationship with Iran.
