Understanding Shani Jayanti

Shani Jayanti 2026: The festival commemorates the birth of Lord Shani, who is the offspring of the Sun God (Surya Dev) and Chhaya. This occasion is marked annually on the *Jyeshtha Amavasya* (New Moon) Tithi. Devotees believe that when Lord Shani is pleased, he shields them from various adversities and grants them stability and justice in their lives.

Spiritual Significance of the Day

Another important aspect of this day is the observance of *Vat Savitri Vrat*, which adds to its spiritual importance. Worshipping Lord Shani after sunset is particularly auspicious. Let’s explore the date for Shani Jayanti this year and the ideal timings for worship.

When is Shani Jayanti 2026?

In 2026, the *Jyeshtha Amavasya* Tithi will begin at 5:11 AM on May 16 and will end at 1:30 AM on May 17. The evening hours are especially favorable for worshipping Lord Shani. The most auspicious time for rituals on this day will be from 7:05 PM to 8:23 PM, and performing ceremonies during this period is believed to bring significant spiritual rewards.

Rituals for Shani Jayanti Worship

On Shani Jayanti, specific rituals and remedies are traditionally observed. After morning baths and daily rituals, it is considered beneficial to offer raw milk, holy Ganges water (*Gangajal*), and fresh water at the base of a Peepal tree.

Following this, devotees should walk around the Peepal tree 11 times. Reciting the mantra "Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah" 108 times is believed to attract the blessings of Lord Shani. Additionally, donating items such as iron, black sesame seeds (*Til*), *Jamun* fruit, oil, and black footwear is also encouraged.

The Dual Celebration of Shani Jayanti

Shani Jayanti is celebrated twice each year. In North India, it is observed on Jyeshtha Amavasya, which falls on May 16 this year. Conversely, in South India, the celebration occurs on Vaishakha Amavasya. Despite these regional differences, the spiritual essence of the day holds equal importance across both areas.

Conclusion

Lord Shani is revered as the God of Justice, rewarding individuals based on their actions (*Karma*). Those who lead lives of truth and integrity receive his blessings, ensuring lasting happiness and prosperity. In contrast, those lacking his grace may struggle to achieve success, regardless of their efforts.
