Early 2026 shows that there isn’t much happening in the way of new information about The Orville. As of now, all of the scripts have been written but there is still no dialog about when a firm production start or release date will happen.
The Hulu series created and starring Seth MacFarlane aired its third season, titled New Horizons, in 2022. Its future has not yet been decided as they are currently dealing with a lot of delays, and cancellations or renewals have been hard to come by.
The scripts are done on March 3, 2026 in a Hollywood Reporter article, MacFarlane confirmed, “I can tell you that season 4 is written. It is a matter of finding the time to get into production. I have 10 scripted episodes. The only reason we haven’t gone into production is because of me. It is all about how much time I have available to spend on this project. You can be assured that if this happens, we will hit the ground running with production.” Hulu seems ready and willing to continue forward.
In August 2024, at Star Trek Las Vegas, cast member Scott Grimes (Gordon Malloy) said that production/preproduction would likely begin January/February 2025. He expects preproduction to start in that timeframe (with work on sets and finetuning), however, there has been no evidence publicly of anything being done morphologically to date due to MacFarlane’s prior commitments (i.e.; Ted on Peacock).
If there is significant production activity occurring during 2025-2026, it is likely that the series will return late 2026 or in 2027, similar to past season’s timelines (consideration must be made for time associated with post production, vfx, and typical streaming platforms). No date has been given for an official release.
The series has moved from Fox for Seasons 1 and 2 to Hulu for Season 3, and it is anticipated that the series will remain on Hulu and possibly cut over to Disney+ for international audiences.
The Orville Season 4: Cast
The core ensemble is expected to return largely unchanged if/when Season 4 happens, given the show’s ensemble nature and MacFarlane’s involvement. Likely returnees include:
- Seth MacFarlane as Capt. Ed Mercer
- Adrianne Palicki as Cmdr. Kelly Grayson
- Penny Johnson Jerald as Dr. Claire Finn
- Scott Grimes as Lt. Gordon Malloy
- Peter Macon as Lt. Cmdr. Bortus
- J. Lee as Lt. Cmdr. John LaMarr
- Jessica Szohr as Lt. Talla Keyali
- Mark Jackson as Isaac
While, Halston Sage’s Lt. Alara Kitan returned as a guest in the Season 3 finale (a wedding), which could hint at a larger role or recurring status. Star Trek-style cameos are likely to continue. Some cast members have expressed interest, though Adrianne Palicki noted in 2025 that discussions stalled around strikes.
Due to the ensemble nature of the show and Seth MacFarlane’s continued involvement, it is speculated that the core cast will be predominantly unchanged for Season 4, if it is picked up. Below are individuals who will likely reprise their respective roles:
• Ed Mercer (Seth MacFarlane)
• Kelly Grayson (Adrianne Palicki)
• Dr. Claire Finn (Penny Johnson Jerald)
• Lt. Gordon Malloy (Scott Grimes)
• Lt. Cmdr. Bortus (Peter Macon)
• Lt. Cmdr. John LaMarr (J. Lee)
• Lt. Talla Keyali (Jessica Szohr)
• Isaac (Mark Jackson)
Halston Sage (Alara Kitan) made a guest appearance during the Season 3 finale (the wedding), which may provide a lead-in to her returning with either a larger role or guest-starring in some capacity in subsequent seasons. Also, possible Star Trek-type cameos will most likely continue. Select cast members have stated that they may want to return however, as Adrianne Palicki stated in 2025, conversations between her and FXX had stalled after the 2023 Actors’ Strike.
The Orville Season 4: Plot details
There is currently no plot synopsis or episode description available, as there is no script or production just yet.
At the conclusion of the third season, the major set-up had been completed. The epilogue of season 3 included a wedding, a new start for many of the show’s characters, and several unresolved plot lines including Ed’s relationships with the crew and the Krill and Moclans continuing their uneasy alliance with the Kaylons.
According to MacFarlane, he considers season four to be like a “blank slate”.
Speculative story lines (from fans/analysts based on previous seasons):
- Continued exploration of potential threats from the Planetary Union to Krill and Moclan alliances.
- Kaylon integration with the union, or new galactic conflicts.
- Standalone stories featuring moral/ethical quandaries (like Star Trek), including a potential adaptation of MacFarlane’s book, “Sympathy for the Devil,” about a child raised in a Nazi Germany simulation.
- Time jumps/narrative jumps in characters (specifically children) due to time passing between the seasons
Humour, drama, and sci-fi are mixed together in the show, which often includes episodes that have self-contained plots that fit into the larger universe.
