Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has strongly condemned Israel’s renewed military actions in Lebanon, describing them as a “blatant violation” of the initial ceasefire agreement and a sign of “deception” that could derail broader peace efforts.
In a pointed statement, Pezeshkian said Israel’s strikes represent a “dangerous sign of deception and lack of commitment to potential agreements.” He warned that continuing such actions would render ongoing negotiations meaningless.
What Pezeshkian Said About the Ceasefire
Pezeshkian emphasized that halting Israeli attacks on Lebanon was a key condition in Iran’s 10-point proposal for the ceasefire with the United States. He added:
The statement comes amid reports of heavy Israeli strikes across Lebanon on April 8, described as some of the most intense since the conflict escalated, with significant casualties reported in Beirut and southern areas.
Why the US-Iran Ceasefire Is Already Under Strain
- Differing interpretations: Iran insists the two-week conditional ceasefire with the US includes an end to hostilities in Lebanon. However, both the US and Israel have repeatedly clarified that Lebanon is not included in the truce, calling it a separate conflict involving Hezbollah.
- Israeli position: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated clearly that Israel continues operations against Hezbollah and that the pause applies only to strikes on Iran.
- Impact on Hormuz: Iran reportedly restricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz in response to the Lebanon strikes, raising fresh concerns over global oil supplies.
This early disagreement has put the fragile truce — announced just days ago — to an immediate test, with talks scheduled to begin soon in Islamabad.
