The first week of April 2026 is over, but lakhs of central government employees are still waiting for the increase in Dearness Allowance (DA). Like every year, this time also an increase in DA was expected to be implemented from January, but the delay in the announcement has increased the concern among the employees. Usually the government announces this in late March or early April, but this time it did not happen.
If we look at the record of previous years, the DA increase in 2025 was announced on March 28 and the order was issued on April 2. And in 2024 also the notification had come by 3rd April. In such a situation, people are finding the delay this time unusual.
How much can DA increase?
According to the data, this time DA may increase by about 2% on the basis of All India Consumer Price Index (AICPI-IW). If this happens then it can increase from the current 58% to 60%. This means that there may be a slight but significant increase in the salary of employees.
What is the real reason for the delay?
In the ET report, experts believe that this delay is not a sign of any major change. Rather, it may simply be a matter of administrative process and timing. Especially due to the preparations for the 8th Pay Commission, the government wants to implement some things in a balanced manner. Experts say that the government increases DA twice a year, for January and July. However, it is not necessary that its announcement should always be made in the same month. Many times it is declared around festivals like Holi or Diwali so that employees can get additional relief.
Can a COVID-like situation occur again?
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the government had frozen DA at 17% for about 18 months. But experts clearly say that right now there is no serious economic situation due to which the government should take such a step. Therefore, the possibility of completely stopping the DA increase is considered very low.
What arrears will be received?
Even if there is a delay in the announcement, the employees will not suffer any loss. DA will always be considered applicable from backdated i.e. 1 January 2026. This means that whenever the announcement is made, the employees will also get their arrears along with it. The government can announce DA increase by the second week of April or the middle of the month. It is believed that this decision will be taken keeping in mind the preparations related to the new financial year and the Pay Commission.
