Less than 24 hours after the highly anticipated ceasefire announcement between the United States and Iran, the agreement is on the verge of collapse. In response to severe Israeli assaults in Lebanon, Iran has made the decisive choice to close the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

These attacks resulted in the tragic loss of 188 lives on Wednesday.

U.S. Response to Iran's Actions

The White House reacted to this closure, labeling it as 'unacceptable' and confirmed that President Donald Trump has been informed. They further noted that Iran's stance appears inconsistent with its previously stated intentions—specifically, the immediate reopening of the Strait, which was a key condition of the ceasefire proposed by Trump.

Press Briefing Highlights

During a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt stated that the U.S. does not accept Iran's decision to impose tolls on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. She emphasized, 'Our priority is the free and unobstructed passage of ships, and President Trump did not agree to such charges by Iran.'

Levitt added, 'Before I came to the podium, the President was briefed on these reports. This stance is entirely unacceptable. Once again, this is a situation where they are saying one thing publicly while indicating something else privately.'

Shipping Routes Affected

Marine tracking data revealed that several ships were altering their routes and turning back near this narrow waterway, highlighting the growing uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. Among these vessels was the oil tanker 'AUROURA,' which reportedly made a sudden 'U-turn' near the Musandam coast and returned towards the Persian Gulf. According to reports, only seven ships managed to transit the Strait on Wednesday following the ceasefire announcement.

Reasons Behind Iran's Closure of the Strait

This action was taken amidst escalating disagreements regarding the ceasefire terms, particularly following Israeli strikes on Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. The Lebanese Health Ministry reported that at least 188 individuals were killed and over 800 injured in the Israeli attacks on Wednesday, marking one of the deadliest days in the conflict's history.

Iran indicated that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz is a direct response to ongoing military actions in the region, despite the ceasefire being in effect. Meanwhile, Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have asserted that Lebanon is not part of this ceasefire agreement.
