Strict action against substitute players
recently, BCCI And the IPL management has instructed the teams that under no circumstances will players who are not included in the stipulated 16 players be allowed on the field to serve drinks or deliver messages. Under the new rule, only five players can be near the boundary line at a time. These players can be from the 16 players of the team or from the rest of the squad, but the number cannot exceed 5. These players were usually seen delivering drinks or retrieving balls that had gone out of bounds.
The rest of the players will be confined to the dugout
As reported by Cricbuzz, team sources revealed that the rest of the players will now have to sit in the dugout. They will not be allowed to move between the boundary line and the LED advertisement boards. Previously, the rules were somewhat relaxed, allowing players to take drinks onto the field as long as they did not disrupt play. However, the BCCI has now tightened clauses 11.5.2 and 24.1.4 of the Match Playing Conditions (MPC), expressly banning these actions.

Why was this decision taken?
While the exact reason behind this new rule is still unclear, it is believed that the move is to maintain discipline and avoid unnecessary chaos during matches. Out of 74 matches of Indian Premier League 2026, 13 matches have been played so far. The 14th match will be played between Delhi Capitals and Gujarat teams in Delhi. The BCCI’s new rule is seen as a major step towards tightening discipline in the IPL. However, it can also affect the teams’ on-field communication and strategy, the impact of which will be evident in the upcoming matches.
