digital desk- There is an uproar in the country’s politics over a controversial statement by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. After sharp criticism over his remarks about the people of Gujarat, Kharge has now apologized. He said that his intention was never to hurt anyone’s sentiments and he always had respect for the people of Gujarat. In fact, while addressing an election rally in Kerala’s Idukki district on Sunday, Kharge had said that the people there are educated and intelligent and they cannot be misled like the “illiterate people” of Gujarat. As soon as his statement came to light, a political uproar broke out and the opposition parties started cornering the Congress.

Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad raised questions

Bharatiya Janata Party BJP launched a scathing attack on Congress regarding this statement. Former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad raised the question whether Rahul Gandhi agrees with this statement? He said that if Rahul Gandhi has any sense at all, then he should distance himself from this comment and publicly condemn it. Ravi Shankar Prasad further said that the position on which Kharge is sitting today was once held by veteran leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Rajendra Prasad, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. In such a situation, it is extremely unfortunate and condemnable for a leader of this level to use such language.

I have always had and will always have the highest respect for the people of Gujarat – Kharge

Seeing the controversy increasing, finally Kharge had to give clarification. He said on Wednesday that parts of his speech had been deliberately misrepresented. Despite this, he accepted his responsibility and expressed regret. “I have and will always have the highest respect for the people of Gujarat. I never intended to hurt anyone’s sentiments,” Kharge said. This entire controversy has once again raised questions on the language and rhetoric of leaders in the election environment. Political analysts believe that statements made in election rallies often gain momentum and have a wide-ranging impact.
