Another major turning point has emerged amid the ongoing tension in West Asia, where different claims regarding the ceasefire are creating confusion. While on one hand a two-week ceasefire has been agreed between America and Iran, on the other hand Israel has made it clear that this agreement will not apply to every area. This is indicating that the situation has not yet become completely normal.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that his country supports the decision of US President Donald Trump, in which attacks against Iran have been stopped for two weeks. However, he also clarified that this ceasefire will not apply to Lebanon. A statement issued by Netanyahu’s office said that Israel supports America’s efforts to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear, missile and terrorism threat. It was also told that America will give priority to these issues in the upcoming talks.
Statement different from Pakistan’s claim
This stand of Israel is different from the statement of Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. Sharif had claimed that this ceasefire would apply to the entire region including Lebanon. In such a situation, the difference between the statements of the two countries has made the situation more complicated.
How did Lebanon become part of the war?
Lebanon joined the conflict when Hezbollah fired rockets toward Israeli cities on March 2. This attack was carried out as revenge for the assassination of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In response, Israel launched large-scale attacks on Lebanon. More than 1500 people died in these attacks and about 10 lakh people were rendered homeless. Due to this the humanitarian crisis there deepened.
US-Iran ceasefire agreement
On Tuesday, shortly before the US deadline, the US and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire. This agreement was reached at the last moment, due to which the possibility of a major conflict was averted. Trump said that he had discussed this issue with Pakistan’s Prime Minister and Army Chief Asim Munir, who had appealed for a ceasefire. Pakistan has played the role of mediator in this matter.
Important meeting will be held in Islamabad
Shehbaz Sharif announced that talks will be held between representatives of America and Iran in Islamabad on April 10. The objective of this meeting is to reach a permanent solution. Iran has also agreed to this conversation and said that it is ready to adopt the diplomatic route to end the conflict.
Iran’s 10-point conditions
Iran has set 10 major conditions to end the war. These include recognition of its uranium enrichment program, removal of all economic sanctions and withdrawal of US forces from the region. Apart from this, Tehran has also demanded to return its frozen assets and make any agreement binding through the United Nations Security Council.
