Controversy Surrounds FSSAI Over Recruitment and FIR Against Activists

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has been under fire due to frequent reports of substandard or adulterated food products. However, this time, the agency is embroiled in a different kind of controversy. Activists questioning the recruitment of five senior officials are reportedly being targeted with criminal cases to silence them. An FIR has been filed against these five officials. Activists have referenced a report from an internal committee formed in December 2024 to uncover the facts. The FIR was based on a complaint from an FSSAI official, but it remains unclear whether the National Food Security Authority requested such a complaint. The allegations suggest that the activists disseminated misleading information and confidential internal documents.

Police Inquiry and Activist Reactions

On April 1, the Delhi Police sent a letter to Twitter Inc. seeking information regarding these handles. The letter indicated that the case relates to allegations from a victim claiming that several handles published posts with malicious intent to defame them and damage their reputation in society. A police officer from the IP Estate police station declined to provide further details, stating that the complaint was made by the department. A media outlet has sent a detailed questionnaire to the FSSAI chairman regarding the FIR and the allegations surrounding the recruitment of officials, promising to update once a response is received.

Impact of the FIR on Activists

The FIR has had a significant impact on some individuals. Nalini Unagar mentioned on April 2 that the Delhi Police has filed an FIR against her after she wrote about an issue concerning the FSSAI. She stated that she has removed that post and is deleting several others as well, citing that she is already dealing with a lot in her life.

Social Media Reactions

Jamesofbabas posted with clapping emojis, expressing that the Delhi Police has filed an FIR against him for exposing irregularities within the FSSAI. He questioned whether the FSSAI or any of its officials had any other recourse besides filing a criminal complaint in this matter.
