Asit Modi said in a statement to Bussiness, “He was not ill, but in the morning we learned from his family that he had passed away. Bhim Vakani was an excellent painter, actor and director — he also worked in the film ‘Lagaan’. He had a big role in the success that his daughter Disha Vakani got as ‘Daya Ben’. He contributed a lot in making Disha’s career.”

He further said – Our relationship was like a family; Whenever he came to Mumbai, he used to come to our house and we used to spend time together. It feels as if a part of my family has gone with them. The real reason for Bhim Vakani’s death and information to his last rites have not been revealed yet.

Who was Bhim Vakani?

Bhim Vakani was a veteran film and TV actor, who created a distinct identity for himself with his supporting characters in Hindi cinema for several decades. He was the father of Disha Vakani; Disha is known for playing the character of ‘Daya Ben’ in ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’. The late actor himself was seen in some episodes of this show.

Bhim Vakani made a strong career for himself in Bollywood, and often got opportunities to play powerful characters in big films. He worked with many big stars like Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan in films like ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’, ‘Lagaan’ and ‘Devdas’.

Apart from Bollywood, Bhim Vakani was also a well-known face in the world of Gujarati theater and TV. Although he had distanced himself from the limelight many years ago, due to his continuous work in different mediums, he remained a well-known and loved face in the Indian entertainment world.

Now talking about Disha Vakani, she was last seen in the role of ‘Daya Ben’ in ‘TMKOC’. She took a maternity break in 2018 and has not returned to the show since then. In December 2024, Asit Modi confirmed that Disha would not be returning to the popular sitcom.
