Every year, World Health Day is observed on April 7, reminding people across the world about the importance of good health and well-being. This year’s theme, “Together for health. Stand with science,” highlights the need for informed choices and healthy routines in daily life.
Good health is not built in a day. It begins with the small habits we follow consistently at home, at school and at work. Often, simple changes in everyday life can make a big difference to both physical and mental well-being.
Here are 10 simple habits that can help lead to a healthier and happier life:
1. Begin the day with water
Start your morning with a glass of water. After several hours of sleep, the body needs hydration. This simple habit helps refresh the body and supports digestion.
2. Do not skip breakfast
Breakfast is the first source of energy for the day. Nutritious foods such as idli, dosa, poha, fruits, eggs or oats can help keep you active and focused.
3. Stay physically active
Make it a habit to walk, cycle, stretch or do light exercise for at least 30 minutes every day. Physical activity helps improve heart health and reduces stress.
4. Include fresh fruits and vegetables
A balanced diet should include seasonal fruits, leafy vegetables, dal and freshly cooked meals. These provide important vitamins and minerals.
5. Limit screen time
Spending too much time on phones, laptops or television can affect sleep and concentration. Taking short breaks helps relax the eyes and improves focus.
6. Get enough sleep
Adequate sleep is essential for good health. Students and adults should aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night.
7. Find ways to reduce stress
Simple activities such as talking to loved ones, listening to music, reading, walking outdoors or practising meditation can help manage stress.
8. Follow good hygiene habits
Washing hands regularly, keeping surroundings clean and maintaining oral hygiene are basic but important steps to stay healthy.
9. Stay away from tobacco and alcohol
Avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption helps protect long-term health and reduces the risk of several diseases.
10. Spend time with family and friends
Strong relationships contribute to happiness and emotional strength. Staying connected with people around you supports mental well-being.
This World Health Day, the focus is on adopting small but meaningful habits that can lead to a healthier, happier and more balanced life.
