Overview of the Nashik Case

The case involving self-proclaimed Baba Ashok Kharat from Nashik has escalated beyond mere superstition and exploitation. It has now transformed into a significant international financial scandal linked to a hawala racket. The Chief Minister has indicated that, given the seriousness of the situation, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) will take over the investigation. Documents obtained by investigative agencies reveal suspicious transactions amounting to approximately ₹300 crore with a prominent builder.

Key Players in the Hawala Racket

There are suspicions that at least five influential individuals from Nashik and Pune are central figures in this hawala operation. Digital evidence, including voice notes and mobile chats, has surfaced, indicating that large sums of money were transferred under the guise of blessings. These funds were allegedly used for the illegal acquisition of land.

Network of Fake Accounts

The extent of Ashok Kharat's fraudulent activities reaches beyond Maharashtra, affecting neighboring states as well. Investigations have uncovered that several fake bank accounts were opened in Karnataka under the pretext of divine darshan. Furthermore, the misuse of others' PAN and Aadhaar cards facilitated the creation of anonymous accounts in cooperative societies, aimed at laundering black money.

Growing List of Crimes

Currently in police custody, Ashok Kharat faces a total of 15 registered cases against him. The latest case was filed in Ahmednagar, marking the third instance of extortion charges against him. This situation underscores that Kharat was operating an organized crime syndicate while masquerading as a spiritual leader.

Chief Minister's Firm Stance

During his visit to Nashik, the Chief Minister made it clear that this case has transcended the jurisdiction of state police and is now linked to significant economic crimes. He stated, 'The involvement of the ED is essential for a thorough investigation into this matter.' In the coming days, it is anticipated that legal action will tighten around several influential builders and powerful individuals.
