ETtech Explainer: Agentic harness, the software that makes AI tick

Indian enterprises are betting big on AI agents, or software that doesn't just answer questions but autonomously books meetings, files reports, and executes multi-step business workflows.

Beneath the buzz lies a less-discussed piece of plumbing that will determine which companies win this race — the agentic harness. This is the software framework that wraps around an AI model and gives it the ability to act and not just respond.

As global tech vendors from Microsoft to Salesforce along with AI native companies, IT majors, and startups rush to embed agentic capabilities into enterprise software, the harness is quietly becoming the most contested layer in the AI value chain.


What is an agentic harness and why does it exist?

AI models have become powerful and can operate independently for simple, one-step tasks like answering a prompt, but they cannot function autonomously on complex, long-running, or multi-step tasks. They cannot remember what happened the day before, send an email, or recover from a crash mid-task. This is where an agentic harness comes in.

It is the software layer that wraps around a model to handle everything the model itself cannot, such as persistent memory, access to tools, safety guardrails, and management of multiple tasks. Harnesses are what makes models work reliably.

What does a harness actually do?

Think of an operations layer sitting between the model and the real world. A harness manages memory, an issue long ailing Large Language Models (LLMs), so an agent that's been working for three hours doesn't forget its original instructions.

It handles tool orchestration, through which it decides which tools to call, in what order, and with what error handling for a particular task. The harness also works with sub-agents: one researches, one writes, one reviews.

Most importantly, it makes space for human-in-the-loop control. The main problem agentic AI gave rise to was the fear of AI going rogue. But agents in a harness are hardwired to pause for approval before they do anything, like deleting a database, sending bulk email, or charging a card.

Who is building agentic harnesses globally?

OpenClaw, one of the fastest-growing open-source projects of 2026, functions as an agent harness. It enables LLMs with scheduling capabilities, browser control, persistent memory, and a bunch of messaging channels.

Anthropic's Claude Code is another major example. While Claude is the AI model, Claude Code is the harness that Anthropic built to wrap around that brain so it can work as a professional developer.

Microsoft has built AutoGen, which focusses on conversational multi-agent systems where agents debate and cross-check each other.

American startup LangChain has built the harness LangGraph that manages complex multi-agent workflows. IBM’s watsonx Orchestrate is a platform for regulated enterprises needing governance, audit trails, and scale.

Is India building this?

Yes, IT firm Hexaware launched Agentverse earlier this year, which offers over 600 ready-to-deploy agents designed for enterprise IT and business operations.

But investors and analysts note that there is a gap in the ecosystem, with many `thin wrappers’ (software with limited capabilities) calling themselves agentic.

How does a harness keep AI agents safe?

The harness clearly defines what the agent is allowed to do before it runs, what it can read, which APIs it can call, and which actions require human approval. It logs every tool call for audit.

Most importantly, rather than probabilistically hoping the model behaves, the harness hard-codes when control will be back in human hands. An emerging standard here is Anthropic's Model Context Protocol (MCP), which governs how tools and context are shared between agents and external systems, a common grammar for safe agent-to-system interaction.

What’s next?

Models may become a commodity and harnesses will likely become the moat for companies, per industry trends. According to a report by Deloitte, the agentic AI market could reach $35 billion by 2030. The next step in this is human-on-the-loop orchestration, where humans will set policy and monitor outcomes rather than approving individual steps.

In its note, Deloitte said more businesses will “accelerate experimenting and scaling complex agent orchestrations, keeping humans in the loop for the coming 12-18 months.’’
