Spain is one of the most popular holiday destinations for Brits, with millions travelling there every year. It's easy to reach, with many places just a two-hour flight from the UK. Most people head to well-known spots like Barcelona or Mallorca, but these places can often be busy and expensive.

Luckily, there are still parts of the country that are much quieter and feel completely different. These places are often described as hidden gems for a reason. And now, one of them has been named the most beautiful place in the world.

That place is the Picos de Europa, a mountain range in northern Spain.

Travel experts at Time Out recently named it the world's most beautiful place. The area stretches across Asturias, Cantabria and Castile and León, in the north of the country.

One of the things that makes it stand out is how close it is to the sea, sitting around 20km (12 miles) from the coast.

Explaining its decision, Time Out said: "Northern Spain's Picos de Europa is one of the most compact mountain ranges in the world, reaching a whopping 2,650 metres in height just 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the coast.

"A marvel of geography, sure, but it also makes for scenes of extraordinary beauty.

"The Picos' mountains rise steeply out of the sea, meaning views contain not just plunging gorges and perilous peaks but gleaming strips of beach and the stormy Cantabrian Sea.

"Within the national park are countless more scenes of beauty: the strikingly lonely Naranjo de Bulnes, age-old mountain villages Sotres and Cain, the shimmering glacial Lakes of Covadonga and the namesake in-cliff shrine and pilgrimage site that teeters over a waterfall."

The Picos de Europa are part of the Cantabrian Mountains and are famous for their high peaks, deep valleys and lakes.

Some of the most popular places to visit include the Lakes of Covadonga, which are two glacial lakes surrounded by hills, and the Ruta del Cares, a 12km (7 miles) walking route that runs through a deep gorge.

The Naranjo de Bulnes is another well-known spot, especially for climbers, while the Fuente Dé cable car takes visitors high up into the mountains in just a few minutes.

There are also a number of villages across the region, including Sotres and Cain. These places are small and quiet, with a much slower and more relaxed pace of life.

Potes is another popular village, often used as a base for exploring the mountains, with traditional buildings and local restaurants.

All in all, visitors can go walking, explore the landscape or try local food such as Cabrales cheese, which is made in the area.
