IPL 2026: In a high-voltage match played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Punjab Kings, as the defending runner-up, performed brilliantly and defeated five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by five wickets. While this second consecutive win has boosted the morale of the team, on the other hand this match brought a heavy penalty for captain Shreyas Iyer. Due to slow over rate, IPL administration has imposed a fine of Rs 24 lakh on Iyer.

Earlier, he was also fined Rs 12 lakh against Gujarat Titans. According to the strict rules of the tournament, now the sword of ‘suspension’ is hanging on Iyer. If they fail to complete the overs in the stipulated time for the third time this season, they could be fined Rs 30 lakh as well as banned for one match.
Players also face punishment, now threat of ban increases
This was Punjab Kings’ second offense of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, due to which not only the captain but the entire team had to face punishment. All members of the playing eleven, including the impact players, have been fined Rs 6 lakh or 25 per cent of their match fees (whichever is lower). According to the rules, if Iyer repeats this mistake for the third time this season, he can be fined and banned for one match.
