Typically, humans are born with two kidneys, and having just one is generally manageable according to medical science. However, there exists a village where the majority of its inhabitants possess only a single kidney.

Indeed, the notion of living with just one kidney may seem astonishing, but it is a reality for many in this village. Inhabitants, regardless of gender, lead their lives with only one kidney. This village, located in Afghanistan, is known as Shen Shai Ba Market, situated near the well-known city of Herat.

Visitors to Shen Shai Ba Market may find the locals appearing normal at first glance, yet their bodies tell a different story. Each household shares a similar experience of having only one kidney.

The reason for this unusual phenomenon in Shen Shai Ba Market is both surprising and distressing. It is not due to any genetic defect but rather a dire economic situation. The villagers are facing severe hunger and lack the financial means to afford food.

As a result, many individuals resort to selling one of their kidneys. The money earned from this sale is often used to secure basic meals for their families. For these villagers, selling a kidney has become a desperate necessity.

The situation for these villagers was already dire, but the arrival of the Taliban has exacerbated their hardships. Many struggle to provide even two meals a day for their families, leading them to sell their kidneys out of sheer desperation.

In the black market, selling a kidney can yield around 200,000 Afghanis, which is approximately 250,000 in local currency. The funds obtained from these sales are crucial for purchasing food for their children, ensuring their survival. A significant number of both men and women in this village have already sold one of their kidneys.
