Shanghai (China) – 2nd globally
China’s leading financial hub ranks as Asia’s top destination and second globally, just behind Melbourne. Dynamic yet steeped in history, Shanghai blends preserved neighborhoods with developments where Chinese and colonial architecture coexist.
The city also claims one of the highest concentrations of coffee shops in the world. It is not uncommon to wander a single street lined with different coffee concepts, each offering inventive drinks.
Time Out released its Best Cities 2026 list earlier this month, ranking 50 worldwide as the most exciting places to live and explore.
The ranking is based on surveys of more than 24,000 residents in 150 cities and inputs from over 100 experts on what people love most about their cities, from food and nightlife to parks and people, while also measuring happiness, affordability and quality of life.
Now in its 10th year, the list also explores themes like romance and community, with each destination offering both experiences and a strong sense of belonging.
