A stunning coastal destination, under three hours from the UK, provides a picturesque getaway with 21C April temperatures and flights from just £13. Almería, located in southeast Spain, sits amidst varied terrain featuring volcanic shores, crystal-clear waters, and striking desert landscapes, blessed with warm sunshine and near-constant clear skies.
It remains relatively undiscovered compared to destinations such as Costa del Sol, boasting quieter shores and a relaxed ambience for a more genuine Spanish experience. Thanks to its proximity to the Tabernas Desert, Almería has earned the nickname 'desert coast' and benefits from a hotter, more arid climate than surrounding regions. It receives over 3,000 hours of sunshine annually and experiences merely around 26 days of rainfall, establishing it as an exceptionally appealing sun-drenched location, reports the Mirror.
In April, travellers can anticipate basking in pleasant 21C conditions and savouring eight hours of glorious sunshine. Throughout the summer period, temperatures can climb to 32C, accompanied by a generous 12 hours of daily sunshine, whilst the Mediterranean waters reach a comfortable 24C.
Beyond the attractive climate, the coastal destination presents an economical break, with flights from London to Almería beginning at £13 in April, or £17 from Manchester, according to Skyscanner.
Furthermore, costs remain relatively stable during peak summer months, with flights from Manchester to Almería available from £28 one-way in July, or from £33 when departing from London. Once you've touched down in the charming Spanish city, the attractive prices persist.
Travel specialists at First Choice discovered that a beer might cost you merely £3 (€3.50) in Almería, whilst a three-course meal for two generally runs between £25 (€30) and £30 (€35).
Beyond its expanses of golden sandy shores, sparkling azure waters, and varied terrain, there's much to discover in the Spanish region.
The pedestrian-friendly, compact city centre overflows with character, from its Gothic and Renaissance structures to historic monuments, winding alleyways and lively tapas establishments.
Almería is famous for its thriving tapas scene and energetic bars, meaning you'll frequently receive complimentary tapas with each beverage, as you eat amongst locals.
There's also the 16th-century cathedral dominating the streetscape, the Plaza Vieja with its stunning architecture and palm trees, and the principal retail district of Puerta de Purchena, which teems with independent boutiques.
Beyond the city lies the protected Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, featuring volcanic cliffs, secluded inlets, and some of the most spectacular Spanish coastline.
There's also the dramatic Tabernas Desert that you can visit during a guided excursion, alongside the delightful whitewashed hilltop settlement of Mojácar. The village might appear familiar to some as it was notably utilised as the setting for major Hollywood films, including Indiana Jones, and the popular television series Game of Thrones.
There's even the chance to visit the maintained Wild West film set of MiniHollywood Oasys, which provides a variety of shows and attractions in an environment that will whisk you directly onto the set of Indiana Jones.
