Police have launched a murder investigation after a man in his twenties died following a stabbing attack in Birmingham. Armed police were called to the scene in Bridge Road, Alum Rock, shortly after midday on Tuesday.

A nearby nursery was placed in lockdown after witnesses saw a man stabbing another man in the street. West Midlands Police confirmed on Tuesday evening that it had launched a murder investigation as the man had died. A woman also suffered injuries that were not life-threatening or changing, the force said. A 32-year-old man has been arrested over the attack and remains in custody. Earlier reports from the Daily Express live blog said armed officers were sent to Bridge Road at around 12.06pm after multiple 999 calls reporting a man had been "seriously injured". Paramedics administered advanced life support at the scene, according to West Midlands Ambulance Service.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "Crews arrived to find a man with serious injuries and administered advanced life support on scene." She added: "A second patient, a woman, was treated for less serious injuries."

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said firearms officers were deployed as part of the force's response after reports a man had been seriously injured.

Our reporter at the scene witnessed one officer carrying a weapon as he jogged down from his vehicle shortly before a cordon was put across a street in Alum Rock.

West Midlands Police Detective Superintendent James Munro later confirmed: "We are reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to a number of people in the area. But would appeal to anyone who has any information to get in touch."
