WhatsApp users on iPhones can now set the app as their default messaging and calling platform, marking a significant shift in Apple’s traditionally closed ecosystem. With the latest update to WhatsApp version 25.8.74, users have the option to bypass Apple’s built-in Messages and Phone/FaceTime apps, enabling WhatsApp to handle calls and messages directly. This development is expected to enhance user convenience and provide greater flexibility in communication choices.

The change was first reported by WABetaInfo and later confirmed by MacRumors. Initially, the ability to set default apps was introduced with iOS 18.2, allowing users to choose their preferred applications for core functions like web browsing, email, and now messaging. Initially expected to be limited to European Union users due to regulatory pressures, Apple has now expanded the functionality globally, allowing all iPhone users to take advantage of this feature.

By setting WhatsApp as the default app for messaging and calling, users can directly initiate WhatsApp chats and calls without manually opening the app. For example, tapping the message or call button within the Contacts app will now launch WhatsApp instead of Apple’s default applications. This change is particularly beneficial for those who primarily use WhatsApp for communication, streamlining their interactions and reducing unnecessary steps.

The move is likely influenced by growing regulatory scrutiny on Apple’s control over its ecosystem, with authorities pushing for increased consumer choice and digital competition. Apple’s decision to allow default app selection aligns with broader industry trends, giving users more control over their preferred communication tools. In addition to this major change, WhatsApp is also testing a new feature that will allow users to link their Instagram profiles to their WhatsApp accounts. As per reports from WABetaInfo, this feature was spotted in WhatsApp Beta for iOS version 25.7.10.70 and is currently available to a limited group of testers. Once implemented, users will be able to display their Instagram profile links directly on their WhatsApp profiles, enhancing connectivity across Meta-owned platforms.

The Instagram profile link is expected to appear below a user’s profile picture and name, making it easier for contacts to discover and engage with their Instagram content. This integration aligns with Meta’s broader strategy to unify its ecosystem, allowing seamless interactions between its different social platforms.
