The Income Tax Bill, 2025 was introduced in the Lok Sabha on 13 February. This will replace the Income Tax Act, 1961. The government says that the purpose of this bill is to simplify the tax law. However, some of its provisions have also created a ruckus. For example, under Section 247 of the new Income Tax Bill, income tax officials can access email, social media, bank details and investment account of any person on suspicion of tax evasion or undisclosed property. Tax officials will get these rights in certain cases. According to reports, these rights will be found only in the case of taxpayers who will be suspected of tax evasion or undisclosed assets.
