Obnews Tech Desk: Meta -owned popular messaging app Whatsapp has banned around 99 lakh Indian accounts in January 2025. This decision has been taken to stop spam and scam. The company's new Compliance report has revealed that WhatsApp is constantly monitoring suspicious and irregular activities and taking necessary action.
Complaints on 13 lakh accounts
Out of the 99 lakh accounts banned by WhatsApp, there were 13 lakh accounts whose complaints were received by the company. These accounts reported by users were banned by the company after a thorough investigation. In addition, the automated system of Whatsapp also starts the process of banning suspected behavior and bulk spam messaging automatically.
Whatsapp initiative to stop misuse
It would not be wrong to say that Meta is taking strict action to prevent misuse of Whatsapp and to protect the scammers from cheating. Under this, in January 2025, 9,474 users filed complaints to WhatsApp, which were in addition to automated ban. Whatsapp allows users to report suspicious accounts or repeated disturbing numbers.
Why are Whatsapp accounts banned?
There can be many reasons behind the banning of Whatsapp account, which are prominent:
- Bulk messaging: If a user sends a large number of unwanted messages, then his account can be banned.
- Spam messaging: The account is also banned even after sending fake or spam links.
- Violation of Whatsapp Policy: If a user violates the service conditions of WhatsApp, his account can be suspended.

What to do when banned?
If a user's WhatsApp account is banned, he cannot access it again. However, the user is given the option to appeal, in which he can clarify its position to the company.
