WhatsApp has recently revealed that about 90 people in two dozen countries have targeted hackers using spyware. The victims include journalist and members of civil society. He was attacked through a hacking tool developed by Israeli company Paragon Solutions, which specializes in making spyware.
Paragon's software, which is often sold to government customers for purposes such as dealing with crime and ensuring national security, was used to tamper with the device of these individuals, the WhatsApp officer told the Reuters.
The thing to make this attack especially worrying is that paragon's spyware uses “zero-click” hack. This means that the victims do not need to click on any harmful link to get infected. The spyware can infiltrate the device without any act of the user, which quietly dissolves the security. Once installed, it offers hackers to the phone.
This also allows them to read encrypted messages on apps like Whatsapp and Signal. The WhatsApp officer told the Reuters that malicious documents were sent to the victims, for which no interaction was required to compromise their devices, which led to such an attack especially secret.
The WhatsApp authorities did not disclose the accurate identity of the targeted people while speaking to the Reuters, but mentioned that the victims were located in more than two dozen countries, including many countries in Europe. However, The Guardian reported that the main goals of hackers were journalists and members of civil society.
The WhatsApp officer confirmed that the company had disrupted the hacking attempt and was directing the affected users to the Canadian Internet Watchdog Group Citizen Lab. However, he did not reveal how WhatsApp determined that there was paragon behind the attack. The officer also mentioned that law enforcement and industry partners were informed, but they did not give any further details.
The FBI has not yet responded to the remarks request. Citizen Lab researcher John Scott-Relleton commented that Paragon spyware targeting WhatsApp users is “a reminder that the dissemination of the fare spyware continues, and as it happens, we continue to see familiar patterns of problematic use Keep it. “
