Tech News Desk – A tech professional living in Bengaluru had to face a new type of cyber attack. Fraudsters break into their computer or phone and steal their banking information. In this way they obtained a huge amount of Rs 2.8 crore and the victim could not do anything. Someone called the victim on WhatsApp posing as a representative of Citi Bank. He said that the victim's credit card has not been approved yet and he will have to get a new SIM card. A few days later, the victim received a packet from City Union Bank containing a mobile phone.

The victim was not aware of this fraud. He inserted a new SIM card in the phone. Later it was found that some dangerous apps were already installed in this phone. These apps stole the OTP received on the victim's phone and the fraudsters obtained his banking information. As soon as the SIM card was activated, the fraudsters withdrew Rs 2.8 crore from the victim's HDFC Bank account, which also included fixed deposit money.

Hackers found a new way
People's concern has increased after this incident. Criminals are targeting people by using pre-fabricated phones. They gain control over people's bank accounts by sending SMS and OTP to themselves. The victim has lodged a complaint at Whitefield police station and officials have started investigation under relevant sections of the IT Act. According to the complaint, the fraud began on November 27, 2024, when the victim received a call on WhatsApp from someone posing as a representative of Citibank.

On December 1, 2024, a courier arrived from 'City Union Bank', carrying a mobile phone of MI 13C company. The victim inserted a new SIM card in the phone, but after that no notification or email came about the credit card. However, when the victim went to the bank on December 5, 2024, for clarification, he learned that Rs 2.8 crore had been defrauded from his two HDFC bank accounts.
