New Delhi:- WhatsApp has decided to end support for many old smartphones with the beginning of the new year. Now the app will not be able to be used in these devices. WhatsApp has taken this decision keeping in mind the security of the app. With this step, the functionality of the app is claimed to be better than before. From January 1, 2025, WhatsApp will stop working on Android phones older than 20. These include those devices which run on older Android versions, such as WhatsApp will not be supported in smartphones running on Android 4.4 KitKat.
Why is WhatsApp shutting down on old devices?
WhatsApp's parent company Meta says that older devices have not received updates for a long time. These may have security and technical flaws, due to which users do not get a better experience of the app. The company wants to focus on new models and better software versions. Most of the affected devices have been launched for more than a decade.
WhatsApp will not support these phones:
Samsung:
Galaxy S3
Galaxy Note 2
Galaxy Ace 3
Galaxy S4 Mini
Motorola:
Moto G (1st Gen)
Motorola Razr HD
Moto E 2014
HTC:
One X
One X+
Desire 500
Desire 601
Sony:
Xperia Z
Xperia SP
Xperia T
Xperia V
LG:
Optimus G
Nexus 4
G2 Mini
L90
What options do users have?
Users of these phones now have only one option left. Users will have to upgrade their devices. That means, if WhatsApp is not running on your old smartphone in the new year, then you will have to buy a new smartphone to continue using WhatsApp. If WhatsApp is not running on your phone from today, then check whether your smartphone model is not included in the list given above.
Why is this decision necessary?
The company says that this step has been taken to provide a better experience to other users. Due to limitations on older phones, it is not possible to update the app. Additionally, new security features and functionality may only be made available on new devices. Keeping these things in mind, the company has taken this decision to upgrade WhatsApp with new features.
