A young woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur attempted suicide twice after an obscene, edited version of her photo went viral on social media.
The incident occurred after unknown miscreants allegedly stole her pictures from her Instagram account, offensively edited them and circulated them widely online. This took a toll on her mental health leading her to attempt suicide.
According to the Times of India, the distressing incident occurred shortly after the woman’s marriage was arranged. The incident traumatised her due to which she attempted suicide, however, the attempt was thwarted by her mother.
Upon hearing the incident, her father, who works in Mumbai, rushed back to the village. Despite his presence and support, the young woman made a second attempt to end her life.
Meanwhile, her fiancé has agreed to postpone their engagement to avoid social disgrace.
The woman on Wednesday contacted police and filed a complaint regarding the incident. Following this, the cyber cell initiated a probe.
SP North Jitendra Kumar assured her that the cyber police had initiated action to track down the culprits and remove the edited photos. “The process of taking down the obscene content is underway, and the perpetrators will be identified soon. Strict action will be taken against them," he added.
