With increasing digital transactions, many still prefer to use and keep cash for various reasons. However, the Income Tax Department has strict rules to prevent tax evasion and black money. Here's what you need to know about keeping cash at home and the regulations surrounding it.
Can You Keep Cash at Home?
The Income Tax rules do not specify a limit on the amount of cash you can keep at home. However:
- You must be able to explain the source of the cash.
- Proper documentation, such as an ITR declaration, must support the money you hold.
- If the cash is legally earned and declared, there’s no need to worry, regardless of the amount.
When Can the Income Tax Department Take Action?
If you cannot justify the source of your cash during an investigation, it may lead to trouble:
- Investigation by Authorities:
- Agencies may question the legality of the cash.
- The Income Tax Department will review your tax declarations and payments.
- Penalties for Undisclosed Cash:
- If the cash is found to be undisclosed, up to 137% of the amount can be recovered as tax and penalties.

Withdrawals Above ₹50,000:
- You must provide your PAN card for withdrawals exceeding ₹50,000 in cash at a time.

TDS on Large Withdrawals:
- Under Section 194N of the Income Tax Act, TDS applies if you withdraw:
- More than ₹20 lakh/year: 2% TDS for non-ITR filers (last 3 years).
- More than ₹1 crore/year: 5% TDS for non-ITR filers; 2% TDS for ITR filers.
- ITR filers can withdraw up to ₹1 crore annually without TDS.
