Kerala: Four school students died and one sustained injuries after a lorry ran over them in Kalladikkode, Palakkad district of Kerala. The lorry, which was carrying cement, was en route to Mannarkkad when the incident occurred. The injured student was immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment.

In a separate incident from a few days ago, four Class 9 girl students from Morarji Desai Residential School in Kolar district drowned at Murudeshwar Beach, Uttara Kannada, during an educational tour. Despite warnings from lifeguards, seven students ventured into the rough sea around 5:30 pm on Tuesday.
Three girls were swept away by strong currents, while another died on the spot. Lifeguards and emergency responders managed to rescue three other students, who were taken to the hospital and are now reported to be stable.
A search operation involving lifeguards, home guards, fishermen, and police recovered the bodies of the three missing girls on Wednesday morning.
Following the incident, Karnataka police registered a case under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, citing negligence, and arrested six teachers who accompanied the students on the trip. They were later released on station bail.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each for the families of the deceased. In a statement on social media, he said: “The families of the four students who died in the accident will be given a compensation of ₹5 lakh each by the state government. Arrangements are being made to transport the bodies to their hometowns.”
