Bank Update: Important Rules to Follow When Depositing Money in the Bank! Avoid Big Losses

When depositing cash in a bank, there are several important rules that you must follow to avoid facing tax-related issues. If you deposit an amount exceeding certain limits, you could face complications with the tax department. Here are some key points you should keep in mind:

1. Reporting on Deposits Above ₹2 Lakh:

If you deposit ₹2 lakh or more in any one bank account during a financial year, the bank is required to report this transaction to the Income Tax Department. This is called a Currency Transaction Report (CTR). It means the bank will inform the tax authorities about your deposit.

2. TDS on Deposits Above ₹50,000:

If you deposit ₹50,000 or more in a single transaction within a financial year, the bank may deduct Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) at 10%. You will also be required to file your Income Tax Return (ITR). However, if you can prove that the deposit is not from your regular income, you may be able to claim a refund of the deducted TDS.

3. Deposits of Old Notes During Demonetization:

If you deposited a large sum in old currency notes post demonetization (2016), the bank may inquire about the source of that money. If you fail to provide a satisfactory explanation, you may face fines or tax issues.

4. Undisclosed Income:

If the bank suspects that you are concealing your income, it may raise a case of tax evasion. After an investigation, you could be liable to pay additional taxes and penalties.

5. PAN Card Requirement:

For cash deposits of ₹50,000 or more, you are required to provide your PAN Card. If you don’t have one, you will need to fill out Form 60. Providing your PAN Card helps ensure a clear record of all your financial transactions, which helps avoid future tax-related problems.

6. Bank’s Scrutiny and Verification:

If you deposit a large amount of cash, the bank may verify the source and legality of the funds. If the bank detects any suspicious transactions, it may report it to the tax department.

Conclusion:

Failing to follow these rules when depositing cash can lead to tax complications. Therefore, it’s essential to understand the income tax regulations and reporting processes related to cash transactions before making a deposit. By staying informed, you can make the deposit process smoother and free from any hassles.
