Now Add Up to 4 Nominees in Your Bank Account: Here’s What It Means for You
In a major update for bank customers, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced and secured approval for the Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill 2024 in Parliament. One of the standout changes is the ability to add up to four nominees to a bank account, a significant improvement over the previous limit of just one.

What’s Changing?

Under the new rules, account holders can now nominate up to four individuals for their deposits or valuables stored in bank lockers. This flexibility allows customers to assign nominees either simultaneously or one after another, depending on their preference. For locker services, however, the nomination process will remain sequential, ensuring smooth succession in case the first nominee is unavailable.

Key Benefits for Customers

  1. Enhanced Flexibility: Customers can secure their assets for multiple family members or beneficiaries.
  2. Simplified Succession: Sequential nominations for lockers ensure fewer disputes and complications for legal heirs.
  3. Improved Regulation: Alongside nominee updates, the bill includes 19 amendments to streamline compliance, enhance regulation, and improve bank auditing.

A Safer Banking Ecosystem

The Finance Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining banking stability since 2014. She highlighted that Indian banks are now more professional and secure, reflecting a significant national achievement.

Government’s Stand on Bank Mergers

Amid discussions on the Banking Amendment Bill, the government clarified that no further mergers of public sector banks are currently being considered. The last major consolidation occurred in 2019, when 10 banks were merged into four.

This update brings a welcome shift for account holders, offering more control over asset management while ensuring ease of compliance and enhanced banking services.
