Bank Holiday on Thursday, December 12, 2024: Why Banks Will Be Closed ?
Siddhi Jain | December 11, 2024 1:15 PM CST

On Thursday, December 12, all public and private sector banks will remain closed in Meghalaya, while they will function normally in other states across India. The closure is due to the observance of Martyrdom Day of Pa-Togan Nengminja Sangma, a day commemorating the sacrifice of the Garo community's warrior who fought against British colonial rule in 1872.

Reasons for the Holiday:

  • Martyrdom Day: December 12 marks the martyrdom of Pa-Togan Nengminja Sangma, a significant figure in the history of Meghalaya’s resistance against British colonial forces.
  • Local Holiday: This is a state-specific holiday observed only in Meghalaya. It is not a national holiday, so banks in other parts of the country will remain open as usual.

Other December 2024 Bank Holidays:

  • December 14 (Saturday): Second Saturday (bank closure).
  • December 15 (Sunday): Weekly holiday.
  • December 18 (Wednesday): Banks closed in Shillong for the death anniversary of U Soso Tham.
  • December 19 (Thursday): Banks closed in Goa for Goa Liberation Day.

  • December 29 (Sunday): Weekly holiday.
  • December 30 (Monday): Banks closed in Shillong for U Kiang Nangbah Day.

Make sure to plan your banking activities accordingly, especially if you're in Meghalaya.
