Big Banking Changes: What the New Amendment Means for Your FD and Nominees

The Banking Amendment Bill 2024, recently passed in the Lok Sabha, introduces significant changes aimed at enhancing customer convenience and streamlining banking processes. Among the 19 modifications highlighted by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, a notable update is the new rule regarding nominees in bank accounts and fixed deposits (FDs). Here’s what you need to know about these changes and how they impact you.

What’s Changing in Nominee Rules?

Previously, account holders could assign only one nominee to their bank accounts or FDs. With the passing of this bill, you can now include up to four nominees. This update ensures better allocation of funds, especially in cases where accounts remain unclaimed.

Why This Change?

According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), a staggering ₹78,000 crore lies unclaimed in banks as of March 2024. The new rule aims to simplify fund transfer to legitimate heirs and reduce unclaimed funds by offering more flexibility in assigning nominees.

How Does the New Rule Work?

You can now choose between two nomination methods:

  1. Shared Allocation: Nominees can be assigned specific portions of the funds. For example, you may decide how much each nominee should receive, allowing precise distribution.
  2. Sequential Nomination: Funds will be transferred to nominees in a specified order, one after the other. This ensures clarity and a systematic approach.

Benefits of the New Rule

  • Flexibility: Account holders can customize fund allocation as per their wishes.
  • Convenience: Families will find it easier to access funds without unnecessary delays.
  • Transparency: The system reduces conflicts over inheritance by clearly defining shares or priorities.

What Else to Know?

The Banking Amendment Bill 2024 brings several other updates, all aimed at simplifying the banking experience for account holders. These changes reflect the government’s intent to make financial systems more user-friendly and responsive to modern needs.

If you have a bank account or fixed deposit, consider updating your nominee details to leverage these new benefits. Ensure your funds are secured and allocated according to your preferences!
