There is important news for Apple iPhone users because WhatsApp will soon stop supporting some older iOS versions and many iPhone models. The list of ineligible iPhone models includes the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. WhatsApp introduces new features and tools with regular updates. However, the new features do not work on older operating systems or processors. Therefore, the app stops its support for older versions of both Android and iPhone devices from time to time.
Let's check out the complete list of devices that will not support WhatsApp from May 5, 2025. According to WhatsApp feature tracker, WABetaInfo, the app will stop supporting iOS versions older than 15.1.
Currently, WhatsApp supports devices running iOS 12 and newer. However, from May 5, iPhones running iOS 15.1 or higher will support WhatsApp. Currently, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus devices only support up to iOS 12.5.7. Therefore, they will not be able to access WhatsApp after this deadline.
WhatsApp iPhone users are advised to update their phones to iOS 15.1 or the latest update to continue using the instant-messaging app. Meanwhile, those who have older models like the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 will now have to upgrade to the newer iPhone models.
iPhone users with older iOS can easily update their device by going to Settings>>General>>Software Update. Now they can update their device as per the given instruction.
Why is WhatsApp ending support?
The decision is part of WhatsApp's strategy to utilize updated APIs and technologies found in newer iOS versions. These advancements allow the app to deliver better performance, introduce new features, and ensure a seamless experience for users. Older iOS versions lack the necessary APIs to support these improvements, forcing WhatsApp to focus its attention on devices running the newer operating system.
This update will apply to both the standard WhatsApp app and WhatsApp Business, as both have the same system requirements. Android users will not be affected by this change, as it is specific to iOS devices.
WhatsApp is providing a notice period of five months, which will give users time to update their devices or consider alternatives if their hardware does not support newer iOS versions.
