TECH: It seems that WhatsApp is sending an alert in its app, informing the users that this app will not work on iPhones with older iOS versions from next year. The alert, which is reportedly only being received by users with older iPhones, says that WhatsApp will stop support for the device and iOS versions after May 5, 2025. Since these iPhone devices cannot be upgraded to the latest iOS version, users are advised to switch to a new iPhone to continue using WhatsApp.

Unsupported iPhone Devices

According to the screenshot shared by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp will “stop supporting” older iOS versions, without specifying which versions will become ineligible to run the chat app. However, the report states that WhatsApp will stop working on iPhone devices running software versions prior to iOS 15.1. The Meta-owned app will also block access to the app through TestFlight, making it nearly impossible for users to chat on these iPhone devices.

This means that devices like iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus will stop receiving support for WhatsApp from May 5, 2025. That's more than six months from now, so users with iPhone devices going unsupported next year have plenty of time to upgrade to a new iPhone or Android smartphone.

Currently, WhatsApp supports devices running iOS 12 or later, so iOS 15.1 is a quantum leap for the company. The report says that upcoming versions of WhatsApp may include updated APIs and other technologies that the app uses to deliver new features. Although they may not work with older iOS versions, the report says that dropping those versions could allow WhatsApp to “customize the app and introduce new features that wouldn't be possible with older operating systems.” ”

The number of users still existing on older iOS versions may also be factored into the decision to end support for WhatsApp. The report notes that a “fairly small portion” of users are using these iOS versions, so even if they don't upgrade to an eligible operating system or device, this will reduce the user base by a negligible margin. However, those who have an iPhone supporting an eligible iOS version are advised to update their device.
