While using WhatsApp Web, if someone shares a person's contact number with you, then you had to save the number from the smartphone. This may change soon. WhatsApp may soon allow all users to save and manage contacts from any device. Till now this feature was only on mobile. This update will be rolled out gradually in the coming weeks. First it will be made available on WhatsApp Web and Windows platform, after that it will be made available on other linked devices. 

This new feature of WhatsApp will allow users to save contacts directly in WhatsApp instead of the phone's contact list. If you change the device or lose your phone, these WhatsApp specific contacts will be automatically restored.

WhatsApp said in its announcement that "These WhatsApp contacts are ideal when you are sharing your smartphone with others or when you want to separate your personal and business contacts when you use more than one WhatsApp account on your smartphone."

Username will soon replace phone number on WhatsApp.
WhatsApp says that this update will prepare the base for the username system in future, which will allow users to connect without sharing phone number. The purpose of bringing this feature is to increase the privacy of the user. However, WhatsApp has not yet given any specific date regarding when this feature will come.
