A salary account is also a savings account but it is called salary account because your salary is credited to it every month. The big difference between a salary account and a savings account is that a salary account is opened by the bank at the request of the employer so that the employee's salary can be credited to that account. On the other hand, the savings account is opened by the person himself so that he can keep money in the account or do savings. Some special benefits are available on salary accounts as compared to normal savings account. If you have not noticed then know about it now.
The biggest benefit of salary account is zero balance facility. Usually if there is no minimum balance in your savings account, then the bank charges you a penalty. But even if there is zero balance in the salary account, no penalty is charged. There is no obligation to maintain a minimum balance in the salary account.
Personal loans, car loans or home loans etc. are easily approved through salary accounts because the bank has solid proof of your income through the bank statement. In such a situation, your eligibility to get a loan is better and the bank is assured about your income. In such a situation, verification of documents for the loan is also done easily.
Overdraft facility is also available on salary accounts of 2 years or more. The overdraft amount limit is equal to two months' basic salary. Under the overdraft facility, even if there is no balance in your bank account, you can withdraw money up to a fixed limit.
Account holders get the facility of checkbook, passbook, netbanking for free on your salary account. Apart from this, there is no charge for the SMS that comes regarding salary credit.
Any facility available on salary account can be availed only as long as your salary is being credited in the account. If salary is not credited in your bank account for three months, then your salary account is converted into a normal savings account. In such a case, the rule of keeping minimum balance in the bank account applies to you as well. Also, all the facilities available on salary account are withdrawn.
